Hey Jan -- great write up man. Thanks for keeping me up to date on this stuff. Have been busy with work so I haven't able to read much about how camp has started. Intrigued by the line combos. Team A seems like such a stronger team based on personnel.

Wonder if it's the same foot that gave him problems in the pre training camp skates.

Are you surprised Johansen didn't get offered, (or ask for), a 1 year bridge deal?

Zuccarello scored 60 points, (lead his team), same way, and after this season, (if he has another strong season), will net something like a $6 mill plus deal.

Zuccarello is 27 years old, a UFA after this season, completely different situation that Johansen.

Apples and Oranges.

Agree with Jimbro here and Columbus did give Johansen multiple option to choose from, none were acceptable. I understand him wanting to get paid, but he is also is coming off only one good season, and as Bob McKenzie tweeted, last year, some felt he was looming to be a first round bust. There has to be a middle ground, but there is so much animosity on both sides, it may take a bit of time for that to dissipate.

Yes, I understand the age, & term status factors, but if the kid was given a 1 year deal, and duplicated it, would that not be enough?
Enough, meaning that he's proven himself to be the teams top forward 2 years in a row.
Not comparing the 2 players in regards to age, & UFA status, but both being young players leading their respected teams in scoring, & will be worth more if they repeat the production. Regardless of those intangibles, both players worth would be very close in salary, obviously the terms would vary.

Thanks for the info Jan. Good to hear both Nash & MSL two of the Rangers older guys are in great shape. Although I never doubted MSL, dude is a freak of nature.

Seems we have a real log jam for the final roster spots assuming Nash, Stepan Kreider, MSL, Zuccarello, Brassard, Hagelin and Moore are pretty much locks. Would love to see Miller make the team this year. I think this is the year we find out if he can hang with the big boys. I personally think he can and will surprise a lot of people if he is given consistent ice time.

But what Jimbo and Jan are saying is that if Zuccarello has another year like he did last year, he's set up to be one of the best UFA forwards on the market. Johansen still has at least 3 year of servitude left with either the Blue Jackets or a team that trades/offer sheets him.

What do we do if at the half way point Zucc is having an incredible year. Do we try to lock him up during the season? I have a feeling Sather wont, but he will make a killing as a UFA. Probably a lot more than Sather will be able to offer.

No, I do understand, contract negotiations are all about comparables, I guess Duchene is the best, and maybe the only comparable.
I know Zuccarello is not a conventional comparison, more outside the box in regards to giving a player what he thinks he deserves, just not sure why a 1 year deal couldn't be compromised instead.

I I hope they would. I'm a fan of Duclair and Buchnevich but I'd feel uneasy about a 20 year old rookie trying to replace Zuccs creativity and passing abitity. Zuccs will be getting paid, no doubt about it. Just depends of if it's going to be on January 1st or July 5th.

With Brassard getting $5 mill, he and Stepan are easily worth $6.5 mill each.
Maybe $7 mill each, after the Toews, & Kane bank heist.

That's bump of 13 goals and and 18 points. That'd be a big bump in production.

Awesome blog Jan

Love that Nash got his conditioning in order. He looked like a fat fck to me all last season.

I'm watching the live scrimmage being streamed on the Rangers site right now and I've gotta say he does look noticeably skinnier.

What it comes down to is leverage though. Brassard and Zuccarello would both be UFAs next summer while Stepan is still a few years away. If Brassard and Zuccarello took the team to arbitration, they could've gotten 1 year deals and hit the open market. That's why the Rangers have to overpay to keep them a bit although Zuccarello took a hometown discount (again) to help us out. Stepan has less leverage because even if he does take us to arbitration next summer, he will still be a RFA the following year.

He did do very well in the play offs and do you guys not expect him to have a better opportunity this season with the amount of minutes he will get and pp time ? Linemates ect I haven't followed stuff like that but I love power forwards and he is one of the new flashy ones I personally think he will be a hell of a player but I haven't followed him as close or as long as you guys
